Topic: Birth Control
Question: Is the Plan B emergency contraceptive the same thing as the RU-486 pill?

Answer:Plan B is an emergency contraceptive drug, not a so-called “abortion pill.” Plan B is used to prevent pregnancy. It is not intended for use after becoming pregnant, and it will not affect an existing pregnancy.

Plan B (two 0.75 mg levonorgestrel pills) is meant to be used as a backup measure after contraception fails (such as when a diaphragm or condom tears, or if two or more birth control pills are missed) or after unprotected sex (unplanned sex or sexual assault), for example. The hormone levonorgestrel is the same ingredient found in a wide range of birth control pills.

Plan B is not right for everyone. It should not be used if you already are pregnant or are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of Plan B’s ingredients. Discuss with your doctor whether this is an option for you. Note that since August 2006, women over age 18 may purchase Plan B without a prescription, but must show proof of age to a licensed pharmacist. Women under age 18 must have a prescription to obtain Plan B.
