How can I be sure if it's the right color?

Before you order a specific color, you can first browse through our online color palette -- available for many of the color-specific items we sell. Use the color palette to determine if a color is light or dark, cool or warm or a particular hue, such as pink, red or coral.

We strive for color accuracy, but given the variances among computer monitors this is not always possible. The online color palette is meant as a guide, similar to the way colors are depicted on our stores' cosmetic displays. It is important to remember that your unique skin tone also affects a color's appearance.

What is your stance on animal testing?

While Walgreens does not restrict sales of products that are animal-tested, we take pride in offering a large selection of products developed by companies that do not participate in animal testing.

It is also our aim to offer products that are determined to be safe by whatever testing methods are needed, even animal testing if there is no valid, scientific alternative. For more information on whether a specific item has been animal-tested, please contact the manufacturer for its specific standards of safe product testing.

Do cosmetics expire and how can I tell?

Yes. Most cosmetics have a limited shelf life. Manufacturers are not required by law to print expiration dates on cosmetic labels or packaging. According to the FDA, expiration dates are simply "rules of thumb," and also depend on proper use and storage.

If a product's appearance, scent, color or texture just doesn't seem "right," or if it has been exposed to high temperatures or multiple users it is probably a good candidate for the trash bin.

Eye cosmetics and "all natural" products have a more limited shelf life. Some industry experts recommend replacing mascara three months after purchase.

Can cosmetics or personal care products interact with my prescription?

While rare, you should be mindful of the possibility for interactions or reactions due to heightened sensitivity with certain medications. If you are using topical prescriptions, eye drops, ear drops, some vitamin supplements or oral medications for some conditions, such as psoriasis or acne, you may be more susceptible. If you suspect that a cosmetic/prescription interaction might be occurring, please contact your health care provider.

What exactly does 'hypoallergenic' mean?

According to the FDA, "hypoallergenic" means only that the manufacturer feels the product is not likely to cause an allergic reaction. In other words, the manufacturer is positioning it as a gentle product for people who have sensitive skin.

Before placing this claim on the label, some companies conduct tests, while others simply don't include perfumes or other common problem-causing ingredients in their products. It is important to know there are no federal standards or definitions for use of the "hypoallergenic" term.

How can I use makeup safely?

A few simple, common-sense steps can ensure the safe use of cosmetics. The FDA suggests the following:

  • Never apply makeup while driving.
  • Never share makeup.
  • Never add liquid to a product to bring it back to its original consistency.
  • Stop using any product that causes an allergic reaction.
  • Throw away makeup if the color changes or an odor develops.
  • Do not use makeup if you have an eye infection.
  • Keep makeup out of sunlight or high temperatures.
  • Keep makeup containers tightly closed when not in use.
  • Never use aerosol beauty products near heat or while smoking.

I think my color or fragrance is discontinued -- what do I do?

Unfortunately, Walgreens cannot place special orders for discontinued cosmetics. Please contact the manufacturer directly to confirm if the item is discontinued and if they offer retired fragrances or colors available for purchase to the general public.

You may also visit an in-store Beauty Advisor for personal assistance with finding a similar substitute.
